One example of engineering schools running empty is the Engineering College in Bali Haryana which closed down and made way for Yogeshwar Dutt Wrestling academy by giving the space on lease, is now bustling with aspiring wrestlers. So, what made the management of Bhagwan Parshuram College of Engineering take such a drastic step? The last batch that was admitted in 2016 had only 60 students against the available 115 seats and the maintenance of a 27 acre campus could only have been made possible by leasing a part of it for some productive activity, pat came the reply from the horse’s mouth, Mr Bhardwaj who is the principal of the college. There was no choice apparently as per him and they initially laid of all the teachers before Yogeshwar made way inside the campus with his students.
He even revealed the startling fact about 51% seats of engineering going vacant in the country in the year 2016-17. The data was taken from the apex body of technical education AICTE by the Indian Express. Another example of the status of engineering admissions is the MIT engineering college in Bulanshahr, UP which has only 12 students in the Electronics Batch in the last year against the sanctioned strength which is 60.
Even the employment statistics of engineering graduates of last year indicate only 40% placements. This only pin points a saturation or an impending crisis like situation that engineering stream is experiencing even though it makes up for 70% of technical education in the country.
Even the AICTE has come to terms with the reality and has already asked the colleges with 70 % more vacant seats for the last five years to shut down their institutes. A full-fledged survey and study was carried out by Indian Express to find out the reason behind such a decline in the engineering education career choice because it had apparently reigned the minds of parents and students for centuries.
Indian Express spoke to academicians, college head honchos and experts and even visited over 10 colleges besides acquiring the data of enrollment of last five years of engineering colleges. Haryana in Uttar Pradesh is worst hit with this crisis with a staggering 64% of vacant seats. Even Tamilnadu which boasts being at the top of the engineering admissions bandwagon with 2.79 lac seats showed 48% vacant seats.
The answers to this question included poor infrastructure, corruption, low quality of education, lack of industry oriented training, but to name a few. Even demonetization and slowed down economy are one of the causes of lack of jobs in the engineering sector says one of the experts from IIT Kanpur. The salaries that are offered to graduates in engineering are only 10K per month against their spent of 6-7 lac for a four year degree course. Hence, there has been a drastic drop in engineering admissions. Vishweshvariya institute of technology that was setup in 2007 saw 90% of its seats unfilled in the year 2016-17.
The ministry of human resource development has also taken notice and keen interest in the matter. They have already planned to revamp the technical education system of India and the first step in the direction is single entrance test on a national level from January 2018, with mandatory induction training and annual faculty training as well as revision in curriculum. Besides, the paper setting will be done as usual by the IITs and NTS will be doing the exam management. AICTE had also asked institutions to expedite the implementation way back before June 2017.
